From the moment we were met at the cruise port by our guide, Dimitris, we knew we were in excellent hands. He picked us up in a spacious, spotless Mercedes van and immediately impressed us with his friendly demeanor and wealth of local knowledge. What truly set this tour apart was Dimitris’s expert ability to pivot and manage the clock. When we arrived at Knossos and saw the staggering morning lines, he suggested a brilliant change of pace to avoid the crowds. Instead of waiting, we headed to the Pottery Workshop of Nikos Ploumakis. Watching the master potter, Nikos, expertly throw a decanter on the wheel was a mesmerizing and intimate cultural highlight. Our journey continued to the Agarathos Monastery, a breathtakingly peaceful sanctuary filled with vibrant flowering plants and trees—a perfect moment of serenity. We then visited Kleanthi Olive Farm for a fascinating tour of the groves and the press. The visit concluded with a delicious lunch featuring various olive oils, fresh bread, fruit, local cheese, and some truly insanely good preserved figs. By the time we returned to Knossos in the afternoon, the crowds had vanished. We were able to experience the ancient site in peace, exactly as it should be seen, before an easy return to the ship. Dimitris was incredibly easy-going and never pressed us for time; his genuine priority was ensuring we experienced the natural beauty and spirit of Crete. Our guide/driver Dimitris was extremely welcoming and interactive. He made sure we were comfortable the whole trip and he really made the experience. On the drive from Heraklion he gave us some background information about Crete. He also supplied us with water as we needed even though it's a good idea to pack your own as well! We stopped at a small town before the gorge for some coffee and cookies which was so cool! He walked us down to the gorge and told us exactly where to go for which pictures! He was so patient with my mom on the hike back up to make sure we were not pushing it too much with the steep steps. We then chose Kalypso beach where he walked us down and showed us around. Amazing views and amazing pictures and amazing memories! Highly recommend this trip to anyone of any age can find something to do (just be cautious of how many steps/hills you can handle!) Things to Know: the gorge water is freezing (you will have to swim to get the super cool pictures), the steps are rocky and uneven (just pace yourself), and we packed lunch to avoid expensive prices.Posted onVerified Awesome day, exceeded our expectations!! We had a private tour at Knossos. Then, we went to a FANTASTIC olive oil mill and tasted some out-of-this-world olive oil. Lastly, we went to a quaint vineyard with a fantastic view and had some delicious wine. What a great day. We had the opportunity to visit the city of Chania and the nearby harbor district. There were several wonderful cafes, great shopping opportunities and the beautiful harbor itself. George took us to an olive oil factory and we were able to sample many types of olive oil and have the process of producing olive oil explained. It was amazing. We then visited a Famous Monestary in the area known for vast olive tree orchards and vineyards. We had a tasting at a wine producer located on the Monestary grounds. Again, that tasting was excellent. We also visited a graveyard where prominent people of Crete are buried and learned the contributions of those people to Crete and Greece. The tour was excellent. George provided the history of Crete from several centuries ago through present day. You cannot visit Greece without seeing Hania and the best way to do this is on George’s well curated and wonderfully executed day trip.
